Here’s What Happens When You Sync ‘Cloverfield’ And ‘The Cloverfield Paradox’

It’s been less than three days since Netflix surprised the world by releasingThe Cloverfield Paradoximmediately after the Super Bowl. If you think that’s not enough time to pinpoint incredibly obscure Easter eggs, you don’t knowCloverfieldfans. These people are hardcore, and someone has already discovered a surprisingly cool thing that happens when you sync up the 2008 movie with the latest entry in the franchise. Check out video of this amazingCloverfieldsync below.

BloodyDisgustingpoints us to RedditorDubC-Ent, who realized that if you sync up the two movies, something amazing happens at the 18:20 mark.Spoilersfor both films ahead.

A Cloverfield Connection

At 18:20 in 2008’sCloverfield, we see an earthquake and power outage at Rob’s party, which prompts the guests to go to the roof and witness an explosion in Manhattan. At 18:20 inThe Cloverfield Paradox, the Shepard particle accelerator begins freaking out on board the Cloverfield space station, ripping space and time apart and essentially serving as the “Big Bang” of the Cloverfield universe. Each movie takes place in a separate dimension, but alien creatures enter all dimensions (including those in the past, present, and future) because of the particle accelerator.

Another Cloververse Redditor who goes by the name “Ghost” put together this video that shows the connection in real time.

Was That Cloverfield Sync Intentional?

Like our ownChris Evangelista, I wasn’t crazy about this movie (you can listen to many of the /Film staff writersdiscuss it here), but one of the elements I actually enjoyed was that it skipped through a lot of preamble and cut to the chase without wasting time. But according to producer J.J. Abrams and director Julius Onah, this wasn’t done on purpose. “No. It was a bizarre coincidence,” Abrams said in aFacebook Q&Aearlier today when he was asked about the synced aspect.

But while that specific connection may have been random, there are plenty of purposeful links that you can find in the film. You canread all about those right here.

The Cloverfield Paradoxis streaming on Netflix right now. The film was directed by Julius Onah and starsGugu Mbatha-Raw, Roger Davies, Daniel Bruhl, Elizabeth Debicki, Chris O’Dowd, Zhang Ziyi, andJohn Ortiz.
