‘Jesus Henry Christ’ Trailer - Toni Collette And Michael Sheen Have A Really Weird Kid

Toni Collettehas already starred in one of the more successful offbeat dysfunctional family comedies in recent years,Little Miss Sunshine, but she’s returning to the territory inDennis Lee’sJesus Henry Christ.Jason Spevackstars as her son, an oddball child prodigy who discovers that he comes from a sperm bank. He sets out to find his biological dad (Michael Sheen), and in the bargain discovers a new sister (Samantha Weinstein) as well. A new trailer has dropped in advance ofJesus Henry Christ’s April VOD release, and you can watch it after the jump.

I’m getting the feeling thatJesus Henry Christmight be too precious for its own good. I generally loathe precocious movie children, and even the official synopsis for this film acknowledges that “[p]recocious doesn’t even begin to describe Henry James Herman.” There’s also the matter that the weird family saga is a premise that’s been done to death, and thoughJesus Henry Christseems to load up on the quirk, it’s not clear what else it adds to the subgenre.

On the other hand, there seems to be a genuine sweetness in some of the performances here, particularly in the scenes between Spevack and Weinstein. Reviews from last year’s Tribeca Film Festival seem to agree, withVarietypraising the actors even as it calls the overall picture “too deliberately eccentric” andSpoutnoting that the four leads deserve better.
