Last month wereportedthat over a dozen IMAX theaters around the world would be presentingGareth Edwards' Star Wars standalone movie in 70mm IMAX 2D film. While the movie was not shot using IMAX’s signature 70mm film cameras, Lucasfilm and Disney is presenting the film in the format in 15 theaters around the world. And for those of you lucky to seeRogue One: A Star Wars Storyin this format, we have learned that Warner Bros is including a seven-minute long prologue for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming war filmDunkirkin front of the movie.Rogue Oneis a gritty war film, so this seems like a perfect fit.
Christopher Nolan has shot large sequences for many of his films using IMAX’s 70mm cameras, and in the past, the IMAX prologues forThe Dark KnightandThe Dark Knight Riseswere previewed before other IMAX presentations in the months before release.
I contacted Warner Bros and IMAX this morning to get official confirmation but have yet to get a response. So I’m not sure if this seven-minute preview will also be included on IMAX digital screenings in addition to the 15 70mm IMAX presentations. IMAX in the past has included some previews on their digital releases, but Nolan’s films have primarily focused on the large format film presentations. We will update and bump up this story if we hear back. Here is the list of IMAX theaters whereRogue Onewill screen in 70mm film projection:

I had a hard time getting tickets to the one theater in southern California screening Rogue One in 70mm, and now that the Dunkirk preview has been revealed, it will probably only get harder to get good seats to these screenings.I’m instead seeing Rogue One opening night at the Burbank IMAX, which is one of their digital theaters. So I do hope that this preview is across all IMAX theaters, although Nolan’s history tells me it probably is limited to the 70mm film screenings.
Nolan captured material and key sequences ofDunkirkusing 15 perf 65mm IMAX cameras. These specific sequences, which will expand to fill more of the screen exclusively in IMAX, will deliver unprecedented crispness and clarity and a truly immersive experience for moviegoers. Nolan’sDunkirkwill feature over 100 minutes of IMAX material, according to sources close to the production.
