Woody Harrelson Raises Doubts About ‘Zombieland 2’
According to one of the original film’s stars,Zombieland 2seems further away than we initially thought. We’d been reporting that the film wassearching for new cameos,the script was draftedand more, all of which lead us to assume the film was smoothly moving through the pipeline. However, in an interview withTotal Film,Woody Harrelson, who played the sweet but violent, Twinkie-lovin' character Tallahassee in the 2009 hit, expressed some doubts that making a sequel would be the right thing to do. Intalking to Total Film(with a thanks toThe Playlist), Harrelson first admitted that he wasn’t 100% sold on the original film at first:
I didn’t even want to read the script… Then as it turns out, I read the script and I thought it was phenomenal, really funny…
But, he now admits he was wrong:
Usually, if I theoretically reject it, I’m right, but this one I was dead wrong. And it might be the first movie I do a sequel to.
So you only, “might” do the sequel, Woody? What are your thoughts?
I’m sure it will happen if everyone does it, but I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do. It’s one thing to do it when it came out real good and it made a lot of people laugh, but then to do a sequel… 99 out of 100 are worse by a lot. So I don’t know. I don’t feel like a sequels guy.
Harrelson is right on a few counts. First, he’s not a sequels guy. He’s never done one. Second, most sequels are inferior to the original and third,Zombieland 2will happen if everyone agrees to come back. At this point, that might be the biggest obstacle though. In addition to Harrelson expressing doubts, there’s the issue of starsJesse EisenbergandEmma Stonebreaking out huge, withThe Social NetworkandEasy Arespectively, following the release ofZombieland. Plus Stone is now working onThe Amazing Spider-Manwhich will qualify her for even more money. Depending on the strength of the script byRhett ReeseandPaul Wernick(who havea ton of other projectslined up as well) who knows if Sony will pony up the significant budget bump it’s going to take to get the band back together. The fact of the matter is, the first film only made $100 million total at the domestic and international box office though it’s become something of a cult classic on DVD.
